Retinal Photography
Retinal photography is more than a simple retinal scan!  Our office is equipped with a 6.2 megapixel digital retinal camera.  Retinal photography produces highly detailed pictures that give a true-to-life representation of your eye.  This service is offered to all patients.  The picture can be taken without dilation (no eye drops to make the pupils large).  This photo provides the doctors with a wonderful reference for monitoring the health of your eye.  The photos are important for early  detection of ocular and systemic diseases such as high blood pressure, glaucoma, diabetes, and macular degeneration.
After the picture is taken, you can view your photo on a computer.  An eye professional can immediately review the results with you.  We have the most up to date software  providing excellent patient education on eye anatomy and many eye conditions.  Complex eye diesease can be explained at a level patients can understand.  Read the example below of a patient with glaucoma.

The arrows are pointing to the white part in the center of the optic nerve, illustrating irreversible damage. A photo is taken periodically to monitor the progression by a comparison of photos. An increase in size of the white part suggests that the glaucoma is progressing. When progression occurs, a change in medication is necessary in order to prevent peripheral vision loss. "The most common question that patients ask me is: 'What do you see inside my eye?'  With retinal photography, I now have the capability to show my patients exactly what I see"
