Warning on Contact Lens Solution

Recently, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning regarding a number of fungal eye infections amongst contact lens wearers in the United States. The fungal infection, fusarium, can be treated; however, if left untreated, may lead to blindness and a need for comeal transplants. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the public health authorities in 17 states have been investigating 109 cases of Fusarium keratitis.  There have been 30 cases fully nvestigated in which 28 were contact lens wearers and a majority of them were using Bausch & Lomb's ReNu or another generic solutions. Please keep in mind that there are nearly 30 million contact lens wearers.

According to the American Optometric Association, the FDA and CDC are advising patients to take precautions to reduce the risk for Fusarium keratitis by exercising preventive practices for contact lens wear that include:

·          Wash hands with soap and water, and dry (lint-free towel) before handling lenses.

·        Wear and replace lenses according to the schedule prescribed by the doctor.

·         Follow the specific lens cleaning and storage guidelines from the doctor and the solution manufacturer.

·         Always use fresh contact lens solution. Do not leave top off or use tap water.

·         Keep the contact lens case clean and replace every 3·6 months.

·        Remove the lenses and consult your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms such as redness, 
            pain, tearing, increased light sensitivity, blurry vision, discharge or swelling.
